If you’re comfortable using computers and confident preparing your own taxes, consider using a free online tax software.

MyFreeTaxes is an easy online tool that helps you file your taxes for free. While there isn’t an income limit to use this program, you cannot use it if you have self-employment income. The site offers free step-by-step guidance to filing taxes. The program is simple to use, and they provide assistance through email or online chat. Tax filing is completely free for both federal and state tax filing.

MyFreeTaxes offers a broader range of tax forms than most VITA sites. If you’re not comfortable using the website on your own, many free tax preparation sites will offer on-site help with the platform.

IRS Free File
​
The IRS Free File Program is a public-private partnership between the IRS and many tax preparation and filing software industry leaders who provide their brand-name products for free. It provides two ways for taxpayers to prepare and file their federal income tax online for free:

Traditional IRS Free File provides free online tax preparation and filing options on IRS partner sites. IRS' partners are online tax preparation companies that develop and deliver this service at no cost to qualifying taxpayers. Please note, only taxpayers whose adjusted gross income (or AGI) is $69,000 or less qualify for any IRS Free File partner offers.

Free File Fillable Forms are electronic federal tax forms you can fill out and file online for free. If you choose this option, you should know how to prepare your own tax return. Please note, it is the only IRS Free File option available for taxpayers whose income (AGI) is greater than $69,000.

Service
VITA sites offer free and reliable tax filing services that can ease the stress of tax filing and help you get the most out of your tax return.
​
VITA is an IRS-sponsored program that prioritizes accuracy. Free tax preparation programs have an accuracy rate of over 90 percent, the highest in the industry. The annual training that VITA volunteers undergo helps prevent the IRS from performing additional verification and reduces the time taxpayers spend to get tax filing mistakes corrected.

VITA offers free tax preparation for workers regardless of age.
